ON Branding, Marketing, Philosophy
A fantastic piece of marketing strategy you should include in your arsenal is giving away free stuff so your potential customers can trial and connect with you before they buy.
Guys like Gary Vaynerchuk (who I actually really like and think he has some fantastic, innovative marketing ideas) are constantly telling you to pour yourself out there FREE FREE FREE.
It’s great – but I feel it can all be taken WAY too far.
The FREE is designed as a TASTE.
If they like the taste, great – then you GIVE THEM THE PLEASURE OF BUYING SOMETHING FROM YOU.
Let me say that in another way…
Do NOT deny your customer the PLEASURE in buying stuff from you.
Here’s the thing…
Buying stuff is FUN. It releases happy chemicals in the brain. You are INVESTING in something that you feel worthy of your hard earned cash.
Heck. That’s why we work so hard – to afford things that give us a little pleasure in life.
I bought a new camera a week ago. It was expensive but I thought – hey – it’s going to allow me to shoot awesome videos for my blog and Secret Society crew.
So I enjoyed buying it and using it.
It’s ABSURD to deny your customers this pleasure.
It’s a great feeling when you have the money to buy something you really want and something you enjoy or is going to benefit you in the future.
The other thing is your customers will VALUE YOUR PRODUCT more if they pay for it.
Quick Human Psychology Lesson:
Say you pick up 2 widgets in a store. They are both the same technically but one is a lot more expensive.
If you buy the cheap one, deep down you go home knowing that there is a better one out there.
So if it fails, you’ll kick yourself for not getting the “higher quality” one.
Even though the widgets are identical, the more expensive one will have a higher perceived value.
What’s the real problem?
The REAL underlying problem here is that business owners aren’t superheros.
Business owners have the same self doubt, negative talk and resistance as any other person.
So they sell themselves short.
Now am I saying take any crap product and put a higher price on it and watch the money rain in?
What i’m saying is if you create something of REAL quality and of real value – make sure you charge for it.
In my early business years I sold myself way too short. Working my guts out for customers and clients for well below what I was worth. I’d see other businesses charging WAY more money for inferior services and products. It was a hard pill to swallow. Please don’t make this mistake yourself.
1. Build amazing stuff that REALLY adds value and delivers what your customers want
2. Give them a taste for free, so they trust you and connect with you
3. Give them the pleasure of buying your product
4. Nurture, love and support those customers so they refer you to others
WARNING: Once you go cheap it’s HARD to then go “premium”. Don’t get stuck!
Be the best.
Here’s the scary thing though: You’re going to have to actually be the best. It’s a scary big responsibility and risk that many people aren’t willing to take. So most businesses be the same as every other business.
Step out. Take the risk. Make it happen and don’t forget: Deliver AWESOME stuff.
Here’s a neat video on this:

“If the Sun and Moon should ever doubt, they’d immediately go out.”
- William Blake
I got an email the other day that made my heart sink:
I’m still struggling. I don’t know what I can offer [as a freedom business]. I have the impression all services are already taken. there is a lot of professionals there. And I just don’t know what to offer to people. How do I find the service?
I’m good at nothing.
That last sentence “I’m good at nothing” really made me stop and think that there’s a bigger issue at play here with this email than just finding the right idea.
I suspect that it’s haunting ALL of us here on the freedom journey.
That big problem that’s going to smack you right in the face is SELF DOUBT and it’s something you’re going to need to be prepared for.
No matter how big (or small) your dream may be – this little self doubt sucker will come and try to mess with you just at the time when you need it to go away.
Wether you’re selling something for $2 or $2000 the self doubt/scary feeling is still the same:
- Right before you decide on a Freedom Business idea, self doubt will come and tell you that your idea is total and complete horrible garbage – to which you should be ashamed of yourself for thinking up such rot!
- As you are about to click “go” on your new website, self doubt will whisper in your ear that it’s not ready yet and needs massive amounts of tweaking and other crazy useless upgrades
- When you go to tell a potential prospect about your new business self doubt tells you that you’re a “straight up poser, good for nothing, and need to research more or get more sales experience before you can possibly ask for a sale – HOW DARE YOU ASK FOR A SALE!”
Self doubt almost always disguises itself as “rational, logical thought”. It says stuff to you like “There’s bigger businesses out there that are smarter and better than you”.
It’s also at it’s strongest right when you are at the finish line.
Yep. It sucks.
Here’s the thing: The underlying cause of ALL self doubt is SELF PRESERVATION.
The human body and mind don’t want to change as that takes EFFORT and a step into the unknown. Even if it’s for the better, our internal self-preservation alarm bells don’t want us to venture into the unknown where it’s dangerous. Little do we know that these preservation systems were built into us evolutionarily at a time when venturing into the unknown meant getting eaten by a giant sabre tooth tiger.
Hence, this is why fat people stay fat and broke people stay broke.
Here’s a little secret from my own world: EVERY SINGLE TIME I’ve upgraded my life (financially, health, relationships) I had a serious PANG! (is that a word?) of self doubt, RIGHT BEFORE I leaped and just did whatever it was that I wanted to do.
Quick Examples from Natural Tim land:
1. Right before I met one of my gorgeous girlfriends upon seeing her at the bar – PANG! “She probably has a boyfriend and won’t like you anyway”
SELF DOUBT: WRONG. Approached (scared out of my brains) and it went smashingly. Relationship though, not so smashingly.
2. When I started eating well and working out crossfit style – PANG! “This probably won’t work, don’t workout today and wait until you have a better plan”
SELF DOUBT: WRONG. Although it was tough, I stuck to my plan and shredded off the fat, not to mention being more clear headed and focused.
3. When launching a new freedom business – PANG! “Nobody is going to want this. You need to go research the market more or fiddle with the website”
SELF DOUBT: WRONG. I’ve proven this so many times to myself… Just get it out to the market ASAP, make a sale ASAP – then adjust on the fly!
Even stuff like sitting down to write this article – PANG! “Nobody want’s to read about self doubt”.
And yet – here I am writing and will post this up even if you don’t like it. All I care is that I had a commitment to make a post today, so come hell or high water it’s going to happen (even if it sucks!).
Most people can’t handle the PANG!. Yet the “PANG!” is keeping them trapped in lives they don’t like.
I know it’s a weird word that I just made up – but that’s physically what it feels like. In your stomach and mind. PANNNNNNG!
So here’s the true spirit and secret in defeating your self doubt
1. Recognise the “PANG!”
It’s when your mind hits the panic button or subtly suggests you stop/defer taking action on your important task.
Notice how it’s either a big PANG! panic – or a subtle suggestion that slips in unnoticed and before you know it you’re on the couch eating ice cream instead of doing your blog post.
2. Ignore the “PANG!” and keep pressing forward
If you’ve recognised that your in-built self preservation system (self doubt) is warning you – then you can politely choose to ignore it and press on.
What matters is not that the end result is a success, but that you ignored the PANG! and pushed something through to completion.
Nobody can take that glory away from you.
One of my favourite all time speeches on this subject is by self made multi-millionaire Art Williams – please enjoy this wisdom (forgive the cheesy intro and old-school feel – skip to 2:41):
I actually listen to this at least a couple of times a week and it still hits home every single time.
Please share with me some of your “PANG!” moments in the comment section below. Where are YOU struggling and fighting with self doubt the most?
ON Branding, Case Studies, Examples, Freedom Tips, How-To, Marketing, One Key Fan, Philosophy
FREEDOM BUSINESS DEFINITION: ‘One Key Fan’
A single person who absolutely ADORES what you do.
They will buy anything and everything you put out, hang on every single tweet you post and share the hell out of your Facebook updates with their friends.
They will argue and defend your product and brand UNTIL DEATH.
They can’t wait to interrupt dinner table conversation just to talk about you and your product.
They even get your logo tattoo’d on themselves.
(Side note: Yes, it was real, a dude did get the Freedom Business logo tattooed on himself – and you’ll learn a very important lesson as to why in this post)
Here’s the big problem when starting out: You REALLY want to start a freedom business but you haven’t got a great idea yet and you have no idea how to find a single customer.
And that’s not even the start of your problems… because every single person, every single day is BOMBARDED with advertising and marketing from all angles.
We are NUMB to it. We don’t see it. We tune out.
As soon as we get a sniff that somebody is trying to sell us something – *poof* we are OUTTA THERE!
Advertising (in the traditional sense) is DEAD.
So what’s the solution?
Is there a solution?
Can anyone really do this freedom business thing?
The answer is YES, YES and YES!
The solution lies in one simple yet very little-known technique – the secret of ONE KEY FAN.
Forget about “targeting a market” like all the old business stuff will tell you.
We don’t live in a collective society anymore. Social media and technology has bought about the age of the INDIVIDUAL therefore you need to TARGET a SINGLE PERSON and make that one person LOVE THE SHIT out of you (yes, very technical terms, I know).
Once that one person loves you so much that they start spreading the word about you, then you have done your job and you can start finding more of the same type of people or better yet, build a community around the same type of people. This community will support you and your business for life.
“Ok, sounds cool – but where’s the proof? and how do I do this?”
One of my freedom businesses is a marketing, branding and advertising agency here in Australia called yep, you guessed it – One Key Fan (logo above).
Here’s the funny part – We don’t even have a proper website up yet. We certainly don’t have an office (yuck), a business telephone number or even a business card.
Whilst all sorts of other companies who do similar work are pouring thousands of dollars into advertising campaigns, we’ve done ZERO promotion and not spent a single cent in advertising or marketing.
It all started back when I did some branding and website work for a business who heard I did good work. For them, I took it to the next level and delivered not just good, but AMAZING work.
I cared for them and their purpose. I loved the vision of their business and I listened deeply to what they wanted. I even called them up randomly just to see how their business was going.
How could I afford to do this?
In true “freedom business” style – My outsource team was doing all the actual hands on work. So whilst i’m chilling at my favourite cafe reading a book, I thought I might as well give them a call.
That person was so pleased with the work and love they got from me that they told a few others (business owners tend to hang out with other business owners). Within one week the One Key Fan business snowballed so much I had to start declining work! There was too much to handle.
HERE’S A HOT TIP: ***People buy stuff from PEOPLE not BRANDS.***
Even though this was technically a company that I was doing this work for, it was the PEOPLE behind the company (specifically the owner/decision maker) that
decided to buy my stuff.
The way to beat the regular advertising and marketing game is to NOT DO ANY ADVERTISING AND MARKETING AT ALL – *gasp!*
It all comes down to this: If you can’t get one person to love what you do and spread the word then you’re dead before you’ve even begun. You will be constantly fighting an uphill battle.
As the old saying goes, “You can’t polish a turd” (it’s still a turd).
Ok. Let’s get down to business here. Are you ready?
How do YOU find your business idea (hidden inside your One Key Fan) and sell your very first product or service?
The Golden “One Key Fan Formula” To Getting Your First Business Idea And Sale:
1. Determine Who Exactly You Want To Make Amazing Stuff For, Or Help?
If you’re just starting out, the VERY FIRST thing you need to do is decide WHO you want to create or find a product or service for.
Most people make the FATAL mistake of thinking of the product or service first, then try to match it with a market. Not you though.
You are going to find someone that YOU REALLY WANT TO make something awesome for.
Who do you want to see a smile on the face of? Who do you want to take pride in your work?
I’ve started businesses based solely on the fact I knew there was money in that area, neglecting the fact that I really disliked the people in that market. Bad move.
I ended up hating life dealing with people I thought sucked and didn’t vibe with my personality at all. Sure I was making money, but I had to talk to and deal with rude, annoying people.
See the thing is, in order to have a successful long term freedom business – you have to be prepared to BLEED for your One Key Fan.
There’s no “dipping your toe in the water” here. If you want authentic, true, die-hard One Key Fan’s – you’re going to have to be authentic, true and die-hard to their cause as well.
You have to be prepared to GIVE more than you get. You have to add love and caring yet be fiercely passionate and fight for your One Key Fan’s success in the world.
So step 1 is deciding exactly who you want to bleed for. It’s the most important step.
2. What Is This One Persons Deepest Frustrations And Desires?
Everyone is frustrated with something – Business owners need more customers, health-nuts need a faster way to burn fat and lonely men need a girlfriend.
If you can tap into what your One Key Fan’s deepest fears, frustrations and desires are then you have struck a literal goldmine.
The idea is that you come along like their knight in shining armour with a gift of a product or service that fixes whatever ails them.
3. What Is This Persons Unique Language? What Does Their Daily Life Look Like?
This is essential knowledge.
In order to build a website or a product that resonates with that person you need to know what language they speak. For example, business owners might use terminology like “return on investment” or “conversion rate”.
Every group in society has it’s own language and way of speaking.
To connect with your One Key Fan you’re also going to need to know what their daily life looks like – specifically: WHERE THEY LIKE TO HANG OUT.
Ask yourself this question: Where does my One Key Fan hang out BEFORE he needs me?
A fantastic way to do this research is to look at blogs or forums that you think your One Key Fan may hang out in. Do a search and pay attention for threads that start with “HELP ME…”.
4. The Mission: Find And Have Coffee With A ONE KEY FAN In REAL LIFE
If you are really going to crush it with your freedom business, you’re going to have to leave your house and get out there in the real world.
You may decided to chat to a potential One Key Fan on a forum, then (as long as they aren’t super creeps, which shouldn’t be your target One Key Fan anyway) invite them
to a public place for a quick coffee.
You’re doing this to get to know your One Key Fan on a HUMAN LEVEL.
Ask them questions and be EMPATHETIC. Remember you CHOSE these people to make something amazing for, so FIND OUT EVERYTHING ABOUT THEM.
Specifically ask: What’s your biggest frustration right now? and What do you think could help solve the problem you have?
This will give you THE golden insight and valuable knowledge to start building a product or service around.
Another example would be if you decided to target clothing store owners. Walk in, have a chat to the owner and say you are doing some research for a project and if you could
ask them a few questions.
5. Build A One Key Fan Profile
So you have chosen WHO you want to do amazing stuff for, you’ve found out where they hang out and what sort of language they use AND you have had a coffee and connected with this type of person in real life.
Now it’s time to build their profile.
Create a real-life name for your One Key Fan. List personality traits. List their frustrations and desires. List their age, marital status and any other relevant details.
Now here’s the secret: every singe thing you do – from website sales copy, to product building, to advertising – needs to TALK DIRECTLY TO THAT ONE KEY FAN and NOBODY ELSE.
You don’t want to be everything to everybody (that NEVER works and leaves your business unfocused and diluted in power). You want to be EVERYTHING to SOMEBODY.
6. Create A Personality (aka Brand) That Connects To This One Key Fan And Delivers Exactly What He Or She Needs
Brand and Branding are just fancy words for saying “personality”.
Remember – people buy stuff from people so the more human you can be, the better. This is why we learn the language of our One Key Fans.
To sum it all up: BE REAL.
As stated above – your logo, your website, your product or service, the way you speak to your prospects and customers and every single thing you do inside your business should talk directly to the HEART of your One Key Fan.
The product and all it’s components comes from your One Key Fan research.
Most businesses FAIL because the try to shove a product at the the market instead of building one FOR the market.
Ever had someone talk AT you rather than TO you? Same thing.
THE BIG IF
IF you can find ONE person in this way, connect with their fears/desires and build something (or find an existing solution) to their problems, then how can your business not be successful?
IF you can deliver this processes successfully to one person – you can then find MANY of the same people using the internet or let your One Key Fan’s spread the word organically about you.
This is the real game changer for the new world of business. Neglect these steps at your own peril!
Here’s me doing a Freedom Business session with some of the Secret Society Mastermind crew today.
This technique/philosophy is something they use every day to rake in new sales in their own freedom businesses. The guys in the Secret Society Mastermind who are really killing it are following this process EXACTLY.
As you can tell in my case. I’m prepared to bleed and die for what I believe in here at Freedom Business.
I don’t consider myself the “be all and end all guru” of all this. Or even the expert. But it’s something that i’ve DONE and tested in THE REAL WORLD.
This is stuff I use every day in my own freedom businesses.
This One Key Fan concept was built out of my many business failures and successes. I know that if I follow the principles outlined in this post, I give myself the greatest chance of success.
If you liked this post all I ask is you please tweet it/like it/stumble upon the hell out of it using the buttons below.
And of course, please post some comments/questions and i’ll answer them.
Stay classy… And go get your One Key Fan and report back the results!
ON Freedom Tips, Fun, Motivation, Philosophy
“Nobody realizes that some people expend tremendous energy merely to be normal.”
- Albert Camus
When you set off on your freedom business adventure it’s AWESOME.
You have taken life into your own hands and can taste the freedom at last.
It’s exciting and the world is your playground.
However, as absolutely amazing that it is, you’re also going to see the other side of the coin pretty fast too. Stuff just isn’t always going to go right, but hey, that’s not always a bad thing either.
I liken it to travel. It’s the unexpected twists and the “off the beaten path” stuff that you really remember when your trip is over.
If you are prepared though, you can face and enjoy these random things that the path throws in your way.
So having said this, I’ve put together a list of a few skills you will need to develop along the way to make sure your business and freedom lifestyle are successful. I think of them as weapons on your quest for ultimate glory.
Weapon 1: Stop Thinking So Damn Small (And Boring)
The internet (and business world in general) is plagued with mediocre businesses. It’s YOUR JOB to step in, smash them all out of the park and WOW the people who want to buy in that market.
You do this through LOVING the people buying from you. Loving them enough to make something that TOTALLY ROCKS THEIR WORLD.
You craft a website, a way of interacting, a way of putting out a personality/vibe and an amazing product that engulfs the audience in an enjoyable experience.
Most people play safe. They play to be in the middle ranks of their marketplaces.
SCREW THAT. If you don’t want to be number 1 then don’t even show up to the game.
I showed up to a piano lesson (for no real reason) with a wise old man back in my country town about five years ago. He asks “why do you want to learn piano?”
“I thought it would be cool”.
In a calm voice this old man looks at me with his steely blue eyes and says “If you don’t what to be number 1 – why play at all?”.
In that once sentence my world was shaken and I respectfully never attended another lesson.
Here is a real-life example…
Would you rather be this web design business?: http://www.webstudio.net.au/
Or are you THIS web design business?: http://kantt.dk/
Take a look at these above 2 businesses.
Yep. Number 2 OOOZES passion, love and personality that you want to get involved in.
Number 1 (sorry web studio lads) just looks like every other website on the internet.
Lesson again: Go for being the best. Nobody else does.
Weapon 2. Find Inspiring Inputs
Stop filling your mind with television and useless crap. garbage in = garbage out.
If you’re going to put something amazing out there in the world as a business and get rewarded with it, then you’re going to have to be in and endless search of the “inspiring best”.
Who is the best in your field of business and why?
Who inspires you and why?
If you can’t answer these then you’re not going to be number 1 (so forget it).
Follow the best and follow your inner inspiration.
In Melbourne there is a great culture here for art, design and creativity that I was naturally drawn to. I had no idea how this city would help me in my business but it’s more than truly paid off.
Steve Jobs was drawn to typography courses and had no idea this would help him down the line at apple. Look at how good the fonts look on your iPhone.
Good books are inputs. Design magazines are inputs. The beach and nature is an input.
What are you drawn to? What inspires you? Find your inputs there.
This leads us to number 3…
Weapon 3. See What Things You Can Join Together To Make A Better Thing That People Will Love And Want To Buy
When you have the right inputs you will start to see ideas that you can join together to make an even better idea.
This is ALL creativity is. Yep, no hocus pocus magical creative god blessings here…
Creativity is simply connecting dots that haven’t been connected yet.
Using your own brain to join things together that previously weren’t, yet are now more useful and awesome.
That’s how Mark Zuckerberg created Facebook. Joined a few ideas together with technology. Technology that is accessible to anyone nowadays.
You might be thinking “Well I’m not Mark or Steve Jobs or Natural Tim – I can’t just create this stuff!”
WHY THE HELL NOT?!
Poor assumption there tiger. I’m no smarter than you and neither is Mark or Steve (sorry boys): See for yourself here…
I didn’t have the faintest idea on how to create a business until I jumped in and just DID IT.
Weapon 4. Play The Long Game
Just wanna make a quick buck? That’s all fine. But what happens after you make it?
You can sure as hell build something in a weekend that makes short term cash – but why not spend a bit more extra time and build something that is going to serve you for a long time as well.
Create something with a bit more spark, a bit more energy and passion – then automate your systems so that spark and passion runs while you don’t physically have to be there.
That’s what Freedom Business is all about.
Weapon 5. Fail
Did I mention that you are going to go off the beaten track no matter how hard you plan?
Yeah you’re going to fail sometimes. But if you keep going that little bit further than everyone else: BOOM. The world opens up.
It hurts. But you learn and you keep going and be thankful for the lesson later.
Weapon 6. Enjoy Failing
The art of the warrior: Hurt and fail with a smile on your face because just around the corner that failure lesson is going to lead to a massive victory.
Failure puts a fire in your stomach that burns until you get back up and win.
Failure gives you an opportunity for RENEWAL and REINVIGORATION.
Failure means YOU STEPPED UP AND PUT YOURSELF OUT THERE (instead of shying away in fear like 99% of the population)
That in itself is enough. You can go to sleep at night content.
Weapon 7. Learn To Work Alone
This was a REALLY hard one for me at the start. I love hanging out with people and enjoy the camaraderie of a group. I’m personally at my best with people around.
However in order to get the job done I had to learn how to shut out drama, people, negativity and nay-sayers in order to make stuff happen
Mentors help with this. Someone else on the same path you can connect with and share the journey.
That’s my 7 for now.
Each of these points is going to be expanded upon and deepened throughout the course of this blog, but I wanted to give you a bit of a taste of what’s in store.
Pack your freedom bags with the weapons. It’s going to be one hell of a ride!

“Life is either a daring adventure or nothing” – Hellen Keller
Hi I’m Natural Tim and this is my blog (i’ll tell you the story of my nickname later)…
Here i’m going to share with you the secrets to creating a little online business that funds a life of freedom, fun and adventure.
See a few years ago on my international travels I was lucky enough to meet a group of people who I now call the “secret society”.
These were normal everyday people that run cool little businesses from their laptops, anywhere in the world and I was privileged enough to sit down and have these guys show me the secrets and formulas to getting my own freedom businesses off the ground.
As you will find out in my free book – at first I was really scared about not doing the normal thing like everyone else, but once I took the leap there was no looking back.
These businesses have allowed me to work from any location, to travel and basically do whatever I like with my days.
Talking about freedom, I even have this beat up old van (now known as the FREEDOM VAN) that I use to go on surf adventures around Australia.
Anyway my close friends started saying “well how can I do this too?” so I started coaching them and even created a private online community called the “secret society mastermind” to coach a small group on how to do it as well.
And that’s what’s led me to create this action packed little adventure blog.
What this blog is about:
- How modern day work is hurting us. Even KILLING us. We aren’t meant to sit on chairs for long hours doing boring, repetitive nonsense. We are the most obese, medicated society in the history of the human race and it’s getting worse. People are more stressed and less connected to the real world outside than ever. It’s time to fight back. You are meant for something more. You were put here to make something amazing and put it out into the world.
- How technology can help us to create a freedom lifestyle where we can sleep the hours we want as long as the work get’s done
- Specifics on creating your own little income generating business that fuels a life of fun and adventure that our body and mind craves
- How to be more productive with your days. It’s all about the time you have NOW not some distant future that may not happen
- Personal stories and interviews from other members of the “secret society” who have managed to escape modern day captivity
- Travel Tips, Fitness and Health Tips, Outsourcing Tips and heaps more fun stuff!
What this blog is NOT about:
- Quick-fix make money online type scams. I’ve unfortunately been sucked in by a few of these and let’s just say the “super deluxe sniper system 9000″ DOESN’T WORK. Or rarely works. Creating a profitable long term business takes a little time, patience and work. It’s more rewarding that way anyway.
- This blog is not going to be filled with useless garbage theories that aren’t tested in the REAL WORLD. I want you to have useful take away stuff that you can go use to directly improve the quality of your life now.
The vision I have for this blog is a portal for people from all walks of life, coming together to create a movement towards a more rewarding and
free work/fun/life balance.
